Working At Height: Improving Height Safety In The Workplace

A1 Height Safety Ltd • January 29, 2020
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) 35 fatal workplace fall from height-related incidents occurred in the UK in 2017/2018, an increase of 40% from 2016/2017.

The number of Work at Height safety breaches recorded on construction sites also saw an increase of 13%, according to the Building Safety Group (BSG).

Whether these figures are due to employers becoming slack with height health and safety, more people working at height than ever before, or a multitude of other factors, the importance of height safety training and equipment can’t be overemphasized.

Risks

Falling
The obvious risk is falling, and many people do not realise that falls from as little as 2 metres can be fatal. Safety harness and height safety equipment are imperative to anyone working above 1.5m. The number of deaths from falling is relatively low in the UK, but injuries such as broken limbs and muscle damage are frequently recorded as a direct result of falling.

Falling Objects
Not securing objects at height or materials stored on a fragile surface are at risk of falling and injuring people below. Sectors such as roofing and the construction industry are particularly important as objects not secured are at risk of injuring members of the public once workers have left the site. Methods should be put in place to secure objects stored at height and appropriate fall arrest systems should be installed in the event of an emergency.

Best Practices in the workplace
As a legal requirement, employers must ensure risk assessments are carried out prior to any work beginning. Appropriate equipment, such as ladders and platforms, should be regularly maintained and inspected.

Risk Assessments
A risk assessment is required to be carried out in any work environment to understand which areas offer the highest potential risks.

Risk Assessments should highlight all potential hazards and indicate the necessary precautions required to prevent injury. Action should then be taken to implement these methods and regular checks should be carried out to ensure that any changes to an environment are addressed with new safety precautions.

Health and safety is vital in any workplace, but particularly if the work carries greater risks. Working on a roof can be very hazardous as it involves working at height and falls from roofs account for 24% of all construction falls. It’s essential that the right precautions and equipment are in place for anyone working on a roof, even if the job is relatively short. Employers also have a responsibility to comply with the Work at Height Regulations 2005, so see below for some top tips for working safely on a roof. Ensure safe access Roof safety starts with ensuring safe access for any employees working on the roof. Access methods should always be planned in advance in line with the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Common methods to access roofs include scaffold towers, mobile access platforms, stair towers, ladders and roof access hatches. Any access equipment should always be inspected before use to ensure that it’s safe. Beware of fragile surfaces A roof might look strong and sturdy but it’s impossible to tell its weight bearing capacities by sight alone. Sheet roofs can be particularly vulnerable so always take extra precautions when working on this fragile surface. Workers should also take extra care to look out for roof lights as these can be a particular hazard. If any are identified, always ensure they are blocked off or clearly marked. Have the right PPE The right personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential for anyone working on a roof. This includes fall restraint or fall arrest systems, protective footwear, safety helmets, high visibility clothing and safety goggles. PPE for each individual should always be combined with more general protective equipment, such as guard rails and safety nets. Proper training It’s vital to ensure that anyone working on a roof is fully trained and competent to do so. This includes proper training in the installation and use of safety measures and knowledge of the risks associated with working at height. All employees should be aware of how to keep themselves safe and how to reduce the risk to others.
